From The Garden of Zen

From the Garden of Zen, that I planted and nurtured. I am finally embarking on my urban sustainability journey. When I began I didn’t really understand how the process of getting closer to the fundamentals of living would positively impact my life.

How I would find myself in love with living a lifestyle  conducive to my overall wellbeing. After almost 20 year’s in the big Apple. I had become used to amenities. 24/7 access had spoiled me. In the back of my mind, I was holding on to the hope of having a small garden someday and house I could refurbish. A house that I could also use as an example of urban sustainable living.okra2019

Cathartic

Fresh food, water and air. The best part of my journey thus far is my garden. It’s become the place I go to reflect after a hard day at work. I’m amazed every time I witness a seed grow to fruition. The life matrix of a plant is a wonderful thing to watch unfold. In those times when I’m depressed or just need to be. I often go to my garden to reflect and gather my thoughts. For me it’s  absolutely spiritual. Just sitting there is catharsis .

With every harvest I am blessed. No pesticides and no genetically modified seeds. I’m confident when I eat and the food actually tastes better. To compliment my garden I purchased a food dryer. I have saved a lot of money and waste. Not to mention the convenience and satisfaction of reaching into the cabinet and grabbing ingredients you have grown. With my food dryer I can eat fruits and vegetables even when they are out of season.

Sanctuary

My garden of Zen, my sanctuary is everything I hoped it would be. It has even turned into a bird refuge. Especially for a pair of Red Robins. I watch them gather the hay and eat bugs and It makes me happy that I could contribute in some small way to their well being. This year I have planted Okra, Corn, Cucumbers, Aloe, Halepeno and Bell peppers.  I also planted Beets, Red Sun Flowers, Squash, Rose Mary, assorted Beans, Dill and Oregano. To top it all off, I  planted 6 fruit trees as well.  Yes, I’m having a good time. My garden of Zen turned out to be everything I hoped for.
