There is no relationship like the one between the K9 and Human beings. For 40,000 years humanity has had the honor of having this amazing species as our stalwart companions. I think the most amazing thing about the species is that no matter how much we change they are willing. We have used them for the protection of our homes and livestock. We have even used them as babysitters and test subjects. To me, the dogs most important role is as a family member.
About a year ½ before my relocation back home to North Florida. I adopted the 1st of my 3 dogs. A Pug came into my life unexpectedly. Braxton was the name he was already given. He was delivered to my apartment In a cardboard box. At the time my lease prohibited pets, but emotionally I needed him and I knew for sure he needed a home. I snuck him in and out of my apartment without being noticed for over a year. That was 10 years ago and even with the added struggle of hiding him. I always felt he was worth the effort.
BRAXTON ON HIGH ALERT
The inherent problems of having a brachiocephalic (short-nosed, funny faced) dog with labored breathing and short endurance are many. I have never had as much fun with a dog. Braxton aka Beautiful Brax is a clown. He is always willing to try and even with his limitations. In his mind, he is a guard dog. When I see his determination and zest for life despite the effects of our genetic tampering on the breed, I’m motivated. Braxton is not an outdoor dog. I don’t even think he would have survived without a climate-controlled environment I was able to provide him. As you can tell by now I’m a dog fan.
I can’t stomach animal abuse and I believe that those people that hurt dogs are destined for a special place in hell. If you don’t have the mental-spiritual of physical capacity to care for a pet. Why would you take on the responsibility? People act as if there is no consequence attached to their actions. Some people even believe that our dominion over this world gives us the right to do whatever we want.
I believe that reciprocity holds sway over all of creation, especially humanity because we have a limited free will. That being said, if you should find yourself hungry, thirsty and tied to a yard pole. It might be because you have abused an animal in another life. I do know we are better off as a species because of the K9 and that fact is undeniable.
Did you know that children reared in a household with dogs have an immune system that is twice as effective as a child raised in a household without dogs? Did you know that a dog can improve your heart health and lower your blood pressure? A Dog in your life can even improve your recovery from heart attacks as well. Some studies have shown that a dog can mitigate the effects of depression, but I know for sure a dog can do just that from experience. It may sound a bit sappy, but my dogs, each of my 3 adoptions has given me perspective, resolve, and happiness.
Through wars, Disasters, illness and in triumph, our relationship with the dog has endured and I have been truly blessed to have had the honor of giving all 3 of my dogs a 2nd chance. In return, I got the best reward any of us could ever hope for, unconditional love.
Pugs are the best! Loyal, steadfast and funny, his name is Braxton and he is the official Strivers TV mascot. He’s a good boy and he’s spoiled to a fault. Braxton always finds a way to make me laugh. By far the most entertaining dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
